James VIII silver Restrike Pattern Crown 1716-Dated (1828) AU58 NGC, KM-PT2, S-5731. A popular and appealing Scottish Pattern Crown, originally engraved by Norbet Roettiers, and then later restruck by Matthew Young c. 1828, before the dies were finally defaced. Known as "The Old Pretender," James III/VIII made two attempts to seize the crown of Scotland, with the failure of his 1716 invasion and subsequent return to France putting an end to any plans to mint coins. Diagnosable as a restrike owing to the presence of minor die rust on both sides, a sharp and only lightly handled piece, showcasing boldly struck devices and cabinet toned surfaces with a semi-Proof likeness to the fields.
